About Mo

He learned to see systems. He chose to build possibility.

Mohammad "Mo" Honarkar is an entrepreneur, investor and builder of places whose career has moved across technology, retail, real estate, hospitality and the arts.

Origins

A life shaped by family, responsibility and imagination.

Mo was born and raised in Tehran in a close‑knit family. His father trusted him with meaningful responsibility on construction projects while he was still a teenager. His mother, a seamstress, designer and teacher, gave him an enduring appreciation for craft, presentation and the intelligence of making something well.

He came to the United States in 1978, supported himself while studying and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Physics from the University of California, Irvine in 1983. The Iranian Revolution separated him from his family for five years. He ultimately made the United States his permanent home and helped his parents and siblings build new lives here.

That experience shaped his understanding of opportunity. It also shaped his belief that places matter because of the lives, memories and possibilities they hold.

From systems to enterprise

Technical training became an operating discipline.

Mo began his career as a software engineer, including work with Toshiba America. Applied physics and software taught him to study systems, identify patterns and solve problems precisely.

Entrepreneurship taught him a second discipline: stay close to the customer, understand the economics at ground level and build the operating platform before pursuing scale.

That approach carried him from fashion retail into wireless communications, where he founded and led two significant multi‑state retail organizations during a period of rapid change in the American mobile market.

The builder's eye

Value often appears before consensus does.

Mo's approach is grounded in observation. He looks for the need others have overlooked, the asset whose potential is obscured by complexity and the place capable of becoming relevant again.

He does not separate vision from operations. A compelling idea is only the beginning. Durable value depends on customers, capital structure, timing, teams, execution and trust.

“I have always been drawn to what something can become.”

Laguna Beach

A place that felt immediately familiar.

When Mo first encountered Laguna Beach as a student, its active streets, restaurants, art and public life reminded him of the Tehran he remembered. He returned for years before making Laguna his home.

His work there has brought together the themes that define his life: entrepreneurship, hospitality, architecture, preservation, art, family and the belief that a place can create both economic and emotional value.

Family and legacy

The next generation remains at the center.

Mo is the father of two daughters and grandfather of five. Family remains central to his life and to the work he hopes to leave behind.

His legacy is not measured only in companies, properties or transactions. It is measured in opportunities created, people welcomed and places given another chance to matter.
